Most people have heard of Hạ Long Bay. In 2023 UNESCO recognised it together with the Cát Bà archipelago as a single World Natural Heritage site, and on Cát Bà Island a stretch of roadside looks straight down on a working boat landing.

Getting there and around

The viewpoint is right at the edge of Phố Cái Bèo, a two-lane asphalt road with street lights (OpenStreetMap). No source records a fee for standing and looking. To go down to the landing and take a boat out to the fishing village and Lan Hạ Bay, you must pay for the boat and the bay entrance fee (Vietnamtourism).

Before you go

No source on railings, pavement or parking at the viewpoint. This is the main roadside, so watch for passing vehicles when you stop to look. Storms in the Gulf of Tonkin region usually fall in Jun–Sep (Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre). During storms, for example 22 Jul 2024 and 22 Aug 2026, Hải Phòng banned boats from going out to sea and halted tourism activities on the sea and islands, so check the forecast before going out to the island. Winter is chilly, with spells of northeast monsoon wind. If you take a boat from the landing, you must wear a life jacket (Vietnamtourism).

What this place is

A viewing spot along Phố Cái Bèo, near the centre of Cát Bà town, classed by Google Maps as a scenic place. From the road above you look down over the whole Bến Bèo landing area below. Nearby is the Cái Bèo archaeological site, the largest ancient coastal fishing village known so far in Vietnam, with artefacts 4,000–7,000 years old. The site was discovered by Madeleine Colani in 1938 and ranked a national monument in 2009, and the area now has many buildings.

The story

Boats at dusk, a fishing village thousands of years old

Most people have heard of Hạ Long Bay. In 2023 UNESCO recognised it together with the Cát Bà archipelago as a single World Natural Heritage site. Picture yourself on Cát Bà Island, Hải Phòng, on a paved road along Cái Bèo Street, not far from the island's central area. You pull over at the roadside and look down: the whole of Bến Bèo (bến means a boat landing) lies spread out below. Late in the afternoon, dozens of tour boats and fishing boats come back one after another, and the golden light falls on the water and on the moored boats. This is not a summit, just a spot at the edge of the road. When you stop to look, watch for passing traffic.

The identity and location of the viewpoint come from the Google Maps listing ‘Viewpoint Bến Bèo’, read in a browser in 2026: the pin matches the stored coordinates exactly, category ‘Scenic spot’ (Thắng cảnh), plus code P3H4+99W. The view down to the dock, the fact that it is near the town centre and the sunrise-watching all come from user reviews on that same listing (around 2024), and only 3 of 49 reviews have been read so far. The scene of boats returning to the dock in the late afternoon comes from the blog of the Sun Paradise Land resort; that article is about the dock, not the spot to stand and view from. Cái Bèo street (Đường Phố Cái Bèo) and the fact that the place belongs to Cát Hải special zone are cross-checked against OpenStreetMap. Information about Lan Hạ Bay, the Cái Bèo archaeological site, the Cát Bà langur and the winter climate comes from Vietnamese Wikipedia. The status of Hạ Long Bay – Cát Bà Archipelago as a World Natural Heritage site follows Báo Đầu tư (16 Sep 2023); this is a heritage of the whole archipelago, not of this viewpoint alone. The storm season comes from the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre. The orders halting boats during storms come from SGGP (22 Jul 2024) and Báo Hải Phòng (22 Aug 2026); these are temporary orders that have expired. The season for going to the islands follows VnExpress (2022), the big waves from late summer follow the VinWonders blog, and the life jackets and boat fees follow Vietnamtourism. What was rejected: the figure ‘2 km to the centre’ (it is the distance of the ferry dock, and it contradicts on-site reviews); sunset times, crowded hours and travel times (times by the minute are not collected); the ticket price for entering the bay (this set does not record price figures); the no-entry warning on Komoot (it belongs to a different gun bunker on the fortress hill); the winter fog claim (the source speaks of the islands of Quảng Ninh); calling the archaeological site ‘the oldest in Vietnam’ (Wikipedia says only ‘the largest in scale currently known’); and the sandy ‘Bến Bèo’ beach in the bay, which is a different place.
