Dark Cave
Picture a boat stopped before a limestone arch, its ceiling sitting just above the water, its floor made of sea. Look inside and there is only dark.
01Getting there and around
Reachable only by water, on a Lan Hạ bay boat trip departing from Bến Bèo (Cát Bà) or from Hạ Long. The cave ceiling is low so large boats cannot enter, and visitors switch to small boats. As of 16 Jun 2026, according to one cruise company, the cave area only receives visitors on small boats.
Before you go
Don't count on getting into Hang Tối (the Dark Cave). This stretch of cave can only be passed at low tide and is usually closed when the water rises, and most visitors only go to the neighbouring Hang Sáng (the Bright Cave). Two other sources say Hang Tối is not open to visitors for safety reasons, and visitors may not swim or wade into the cave (Paradise Vietnam, undated). Kayaking in the bays of the Cát Bà archipelago has been suspended since 15 Nov 2024 and was extended by the People's Committee of Cát Hải special zone under Notice 483/TB-UBND. The bay area has a diurnal tide regime, so the water level rises and falls clearly during the day. Storms usually fall between June and September, so avoid taking a boat out to the bay in this season (Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, VMRCC).
What this place is
Hang Tối is one half of the Sáng – Tối cave pair on Lan Hạ bay in the Cát Bà archipelago, where Lan Hạ bay meets Hạ Long bay. It is a waterway through the limestone mountain, with the cave floor flooded by sea water and the ceiling low over the surface. The Hang Tối stretch is narrow and dark, a torch is needed, and at the end of it you come out into a stretch of water enclosed on four sides by rock walls. The cave area lies within Cát Bà National Park and the Cát Bà Marine Protected Area.
The story
Hang Tối: a stone door the tide keeps locked
Picture a boat stopped before a limestone arch, its ceiling sitting just above the water, its floor made of sea. Look inside and there is only dark: this stretch is narrow, and almost no light gets in. This is Hang Tối, the Dark Cave, one half of the Hang Sáng – Hang Tối pair ("hang" means cave) in Lan Hạ Bay, in the Cát Bà archipelago, where Lan Hạ Bay meets Hạ Long Bay.

The position of Hang Tối within the Hang Sáng – Hang Tối cave cluster in Lan Hạ Bay, and the departure dock, come from the guide of mia.vn (22 Sep 2023), which is a retailer's blog, not a newspaper. The cave's shape, the fact that the Hang Tối section can be passed only at low tide, and the fact that large boats cannot enter come from the article by Local Vietnam (19 Jun 2026). The fact that Hang Tối is not open to visitors for safety reasons comes from mia.vn and the page of the boat operator Bai Tho Junks (23 Feb 2024). The advice not to swim or wade into the cave comes from Paradise Vietnam (no date given). The temporary kayaking ban from 15 Nov 2024 and its extension under Notice 483/TB-UBND of the People's Committee of Cát Hải Special Zone are taken from the quotation by the operator Amanda Cruises (27 Nov 2025), because the original document has not been read. The current arrangement of receiving visitors with small boats comes from a cruise operator (16 Jun 2026). The diurnal tide regime, the two monsoon seasons and the storm season come from the page on hydro-meteorological characteristics of the Gulf of Tonkin of the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (VMRCC). The administrative unit (Cát Hải Special Zone, Hải Phòng City) and the location within Cát Bà National Park and the Cát Bà Marine Protected Area come from OpenStreetMap. Rejected: the figures for the cave's length, height and width, because sources differ and none was measured; the 'best hour' to the minute; the 'best season', because only one tour blog says it and it contradicts itself; the story of Cát Bà langurs in the cave; the praise 'quiet, empty', because the source is undated and contradicts a boat operator in 2026; the distance from Bến Bèo; and every description of kayaking and swimming as activities currently available. No photo is published in this run, because the photos found duplicate the Hang Sáng record or do not show the cave.
