Phu Quy Protestant Church

Picture Christmas Eve 1993 on Phú Quý, an island about 120 km by sea east of Phan Thiết. The old church was gone. The congregation then numbered around forty believers, and the preacher who had come from the mainland to strengthen it was lodging in a member's home. Still, that night they held a solemn Christmas service. Today this is neither a ruin nor a museum: Nhà thờ Tin Lành Phú Quý is the working Protestant church of the Phú Quý congregation (Chi hội, a local branch church), and the congregation still gathers every week.
A new building, a story from 1936
According to the Church's own history, Protestantism reached the island on 28 March 1936, brought by Pastor Ông Văn Trung (Ông is his family name), then serving the church in Phan Thiết, together with Deacon Lê Châu. The first islander to pray and accept the faith was Mr Ngô Văn Lành, aged 63, who held the title Hương chủ, a village-notable rank. In 1956 Pastor Lê Khắc Chấn and three companions came to preach for two weeks; the family of Mr Ngô Lục, eldest son of Ngô Văn Lành, gave their tiled three-bay house with two side wings as a chapel, and the congregation took shape from there. By Pastor Lê Khắc Chấn's own 1956 account, islanders then lived by growing corn, sweet potatoes, beans and cotton and by fishing, and life was hard. In 1968 the congregation dedicated its first church. On 11 June 1978 the Phú Quý authorities asked for the church property to be handed over to state management, and the church was then taken down — the Church's history calls it the greatest loss for believers on the island.
From 1993 the congregation gathered again. Its meeting place moved from the eaves of Mr Ngô Xiểu's house to Mr Châu Đạt's house in 1995; in 1999 a temporary church was put up on Mr Châu Đạt's land. In 2009 the congregation was granted new land. Short of funds, they built the Christian Education building (khối Cơ Đốc Giáo Dục) first and met there from 2010, then went on to build the church, finished in 2013. Nearly 400 people attended the dedication in July 2013; many mainland believers came across by boat, and the congregation covered the loss on the boat charter for them. Are you curious how a small community out at sea held together while its meeting place kept moving from one roof to another?
So what is worth seeing here is not an old building. The grounds hold the church finished in 2013 and the Christian Education building — the one that served as a temporary meeting place while the church went up. The old part lives elsewhere: in a family that gave its house as a chapel, in borrowed eaves, in mainland believers crossing by boat for a dedication. Standing before a new church on a distant island, what would you ask: is the heritage the building, or the people who keep finding their way back to gather around it?

From someone who has been
To see this place alive, Sunday morning is when the congregation gathers for worship — that is the believers' time, not visiting hours, so remember you are stepping into the life of a community. The way to the island is by sea: in 2016, mainland guests coming for the 80th anniversary of Protestantism on Phú Quý had to wait for calm water before boarding.

The name, type, address 02 Lương Định Của and the weekly gathering schedule come from the branch directory of the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (South), viewed on 29 Sep 2026. The Protestant church type and the position were cross-checked the same day with OpenStreetMap and Google Maps. That the congregation is still active is based on the current directory and the report of the installation ceremony of the pastor in charge in Nov 2023 on the website of the Evangelical Church of Vietnam. The history from 1936 to 2013 follows articles on that same site: the brief history published on the occasion of the church's dedication (2013), the article marking 80 years of Protestantism arriving in Phú Quý (2016), and the 1956 report by Pastor Lê Khắc Chấn that was reposted. All historical milestones are the Church's own account; we have not found any independent press or research. We do not use the hours 'open all day' and the phone number on Google Maps because they are user-contributed data. Nor do we use the plot area and the building permit number in the 2010 project document, because the figures contradict themselves or are cited from the wrong source. No source yet describes the church's architecture or rules for visitors, and there is no openly licensed photo of this place.
