Practical details

Highlights

Planning

  • The village has no separate entrance ticket. Taking a boat from Bến Bèo into the Lan Hạ bay area means paying the bay sightseeing fee. The archaeological site on land has no entrance or exhibition area to see: in 2010 the Institute of Archaeology warned that the site had been seriously encroached upon, and now there are many buildings on it.

Atmosphere

  • Làng chài Cái Bèo, also called làng chài Vụng O, is a cluster of floating houses and fish-farming cages on the water south-east of Cát Bà town, the gateway into Lan Hạ bay. On the mainland nearby is the Cái Bèo archaeological site, where prehistoric people lived off the sea about seven thousand to five thousand years ago. The Vietnam Institute of Archaeology regards it as the most important archaeological site of the north-eastern coastal region.

Popular for

  • People come to see fishing life on the water: villagers catch and farm cage fish (grouper, snapper, sea bass), and visitors hire boats to weave among the rafts and eat seafood in the floating houses.

Service options

  • From Bến Bèo, a small boat takes about five minutes to reach the village.

Source

The coordinates and identity of the floating fishing village come from OpenStreetMap (relation 20057203) and Wikidata (Q24958706, label 'Làng chài Cái Bèo'), looked up on 10 Oct 2026. This record's old Google Maps pin fell on a guesthouse at 152 Phố Cái Bèo, so it was dropped. The archaeological site section comes from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology (article of 1 Sep 2010: Madeleine Colani discovered it in 1938 and named it 'Vịnh Làng Chài', national monument ranking in 2009, warning that the site is being encroached upon), the special feature 'Dấu ấn người xưa ở vịnh Hạ Long' in Báo Nhân Dân, an article in Frontiers in Earth Science (2022) on the dating, excavated area and starch traces on stone tools, and an article in Vietnam Social Sciences (2021) on the Cái Bèo culture and maritime economy. Fishing village life comes from Báo Pháp Luật, Người Quan Sát (2024), vietnamtourism.com and localvietnam.com, looked up on 10 Oct 2026. Not used: the number of households (four sources give four different figures), the story of President Hồ Chí Minh visiting the village in 1959 (the source itself contradicts itself), the commune name 'Đông Hải' in the Nhân Dân article (the former Cát Hải district had no such commune), and hypotheses on the origin of the name Cái Bèo (no toponymy source).
