Picture the cabin sliding out of Ánh Dương station as the sea off An Thới drops away beneath your feet. Nearly eight kilometres of cable arc over the islets of Hòn Dừa and Hòn Rỏi, carried by six steel pylons rising straight out of the water — the tallest well over a hundred metres — before touching down on Hòn Thơm island. In January 2018, Guinness certified this line as the world's longest three-wire cable car crossing over sea. A few weeks later, on 4 February 2018, it opened.

Hòn Thơm Cable Car — an eight-year-old record hanging over the sea

What does a structure barely eight years old keep of the past? Perhaps the answer runs the other way: it is busy becoming Phú Quốc's past. A record stamps a date — the Doppelmayr three-wire system (a tramway technology from the Austrian-rooted ropeway maker), two stations, six pylons, all carrying 2018 like a signature line. Even the address is layering like sediment: older records say "An Thới, Phú Quốc", while the operator's site now writes "Phú Quốc Special Zone, An Giang" — the place names of Vietnam's 2025 administrative reform changing faster than the steel out at sea. An eight-year-old record — would you call that heritage?

A day here starts with understanding the ticket: there is no "just the scenic ride" option. The only ticket is a round-trip bundle that includes Sun World Hon Thom on the island — Sun Group's theme-park complex, with the Aquatopia water park and the Exotica Village rides, home to Mộc Xà Thịnh Nộ, Vietnam's first wooden roller coaster. It sits at the high end of Vietnamese attraction pricing: one adult pays roughly what several good restaurant meals cost, and a small family should budget for it in advance. The cable car also does not run continuously — it operates in timed windows with a long midday break; miss a window and you wait for hours, miss the afternoon one and you miss the ride back.

Here is what the ticket page will not volunteer: the whole island hangs on this one cable. On the afternoon of the third day of Tết 2026 — the Lunar New Year peak — a power fault stopped the line while around eight thousand visitors were on the island; they were evacuated by some thirty speedboats, into the evening, and the operator refunded tickets. Modern, it turns out, means everything depends on a single artery — and when it stops, the island falls back on the oldest way across water: boats. If there is a reason to go, it is to hang suspended between those two eras yourself, over a stretch of sea long enough to think it through.

Enough to decide whether to go

What this is
A 7,899.9m three-wire cable car linking An Thới (Phú Quốc) to Hòn Thơm island, passing over Hòn Dừa and Hòn Rỏi; opened 4 Feb 2018; Guinness record for the world's longest three-wire cable car over sea, certified Jan 2018; operated by Sun Group.
Where it departs
Ánh Dương station, inside the Sunset Town complex, An Thới area, southern Phú Quốc.
What the ticket covers
Round-trip bundle only, including Sun World Hon Thom (Aquatopia water park + Exotica Village), same-day use, single entry: adults 850,000 VND, children 1m–1.4m 700,000 VND, under 1m free (listed from 01/01/2026, verified 31/08–01/09/2026). No ride-only ticket; evening shows, the Kiss Bridge and beach services are sold separately.
How long it takes
One way roughly 15–25 minutes depending on operating period (not published by the operator; reference sources 2022–2026); the island plus water park fills a full day.
Operating hours
Open 09:30–17:00, but the cable runs in windows: 09:30–11:30, 13:30–14:00, 15:30–17:30 (operator's site, read 31/08/2026); changes with weather and maintenance — recheck the official source before going.
When to go
Dry season, December–April (per a June 2025 guide). Avoid Tết, the Lunar New Year peak — around 8,000 visitors on the island in one afternoon (Tết 2026) — and maintenance shutdowns in late March and late in the year.

From someone who has been

Do not book flights around a Hòn Thơm trip before checking the operator's news page: the line once closed for over two months of maintenance in late 2023, and a late-March 2026 shutdown closed nearly the whole island — cable, both parks, even the speedboats — with only a week's notice. Arrive early for the morning window and watch the afternoon one for your ride back. Tickets cannot be changed or refunded once paid, so pick a calm-weather day before you hit pay. And if all you want is the ride over the sea: there is no ticket for just that — count on buying the whole day.
